Washington's Mother
Mary Ball Washington was born on November 30, 1708 in Lancaster County, Virginia. She spent her youth in the home of her guardian George Eskridge. Years later, in March 1731, after inheriting land from her guardian, Mary married Augustine Washington and had five children. Her oldest child, George Washington, is named after George Eskridge. Three years later the family moved to Ferry Farm in King George County, and Augustine suddenly died. Mary decided to raise her kids as a widow and run the farm by herself. She lived in Ferry Farm until 1772 when she moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia. Mary died in 1789 and was buried in Fredericksburg near Kenmore, the home of her daughter Betty. There was a statue made in her honor.
