Birthplace of Monroe
Monroe was born here in Westmoreland County on April 28, 1758, within eye-shot of what was later to become the Town of Colonial Beach. He was one of the five children of Spence Monroe and Elizabeth Jones who were both natives of Virginia. Five hundred acres of land and a 20-foot by 58-foot four-room dwelling is not only where Monroe was born, but where he spent the first sixteen years of his life working the farm. James Monroe enjoyed the many advantages of being the son of a prosperous planter. He was also rich in legacy. His father, Spence Monroe, traced his ancestry back to King Edward III of England. James's great-grandfather had fought at the side of Charles I in the English Civil Wars. His mother, Elizabeth, was of Welsh heritage as well.
